INTIPSA will be a focus for the emerging community of intellectual property strategists – business professionals intent on building their careers in IP strategy either as in-house practitioners and specialists or external advisors
IP strategy is an emerging field, which at present is served by a wide variety of interests. There is little recognition within firms, particularly SMEs, of IP strategy being a function distinct from day-to-day IP management, nor of the strategic role of IP in building and maintaining competitive advantage. At the same time, there is no independent benchmark for the wide variety of advisors offering IP strategy services. Hence, the market lacks both reference points on best practice and the latest thinking, as well as independent guarantors of quality and competence.
We share a vision that IP needs to be integrated into mainline business strategy and become part of the board agenda:
- We believe that businesses need to improve their strategic use of IP rights to compete effectively in the global economy.
- We believe that business leaders need to be as conversant with IP strategy as they would be with marketing or finance.
- We believe that members of INTIPSA can all benefit from increased awareness and understanding of IP strategy in business.
INTIPSA’s key function will be to strengthen and animate the IP strategy ecosystem. It will be a think-tank on IP strategy and innovation, and a knowledge hub on the application of IP strategy within business. It will lead the debate on the strategic role of IP in the transition to a high value-adding, service-led and knowledge-based economy. We see it as a vibrant and active business community, both online and offline, bringing together practitioners of IP strategy, users of IP strategy services, as well as academics and policy-makers involved in the IP strategy field.
