On Tuesday 16th August, INTIPSA will be participating in an event designed to explore the proposals in more detail. At a meeting hosted by the law firm, Wragge & Co, Anna Floyer-Lea and Ian Valentine from the Treasury who are leading the consultation will be present to answer your questions. This is your opportunity to check how well the proposals will work for your business and to lobby for any changes. The consultation period is open until the end of August.

Fellows are expected to be highly-experienced practitioners who are at the top of the profession. They work in strategic IP management on a day-to-day basis and at detailed level (although do not necessarily have Board responsibility), and are able to demonstrate experience in creating and building business value through IP strategy.

The outstanding issues of online brand protection continue to cause a stir in the IP world and beyond. INTIPSA is supporting an upcoming conference on these issues being held at the Le Meridien Hotel, Piccadilly, London.

Representatives of a number of firms and companies were able to submit questions to Ian Valentine (a deputy director at HM Revenue & Customs) and Anna Floyer-Lea (HM Treasury).

Five INTIPSA representatives – COO Mike Sharpe plus board members Dr Jackie Maguire, Jon Calvert, Ben Goodger, and John Pryor – made the trip. They explained our concept to Congress delegates, signing up many new members, and discussed partnership opportunities.

The first fruits of this trip will become apparent over the next few months.

Facing tight economic conditions many companies throughout the world and in different sectors find themselves in need of promptly revising their short- and long-term development plans to reduce the negative impact of the crisis or even keep their business afloat.

For the IP departments of companies, who wish to protect their valuable technology, this often means finding innovative ways of spending reduced budgets and adapting their patenting strategies to the uncertain economic environment, or to the new company’s longer term business strategy.

In their recent book “The Invisible Edge” Mark Blaxill and Ralph Eckard make strong arguments for placing an intellectual property strategy at the heart of a firm’s corporate strategy. Whoever owns the IP associated with innovations will own the profits. Innovative companies being careless about seeking protection for their innovations will likely end up in a situation where competitors are quickly catching up and taking benefit from the innovator’s investments. Being able to compete on a lower cost base they will take a big portion of the market away from the innovator and cash in the profits. This is a well known IP related threat for innovative firms.

The challenge for the innovator is to own the right IP allowing to control the innovation in the market and reap the profits as a basis for continuous innovation. This article proposes a practical approach how to integrate an IP Strategy with the Corporate Strategy. The approach not only aligns the IP strategy with the business needs but also implements a closed strategy loop where the IP strategy feeds back into the technology strategy of the business having impact on the organizational development of the firm’s innovation functions. In general, we refer to the term strategy as a plan of action designed to achieve the firm’s goals and objectives.
